Luxury Kitchen Remodeling in Maryland
Byrd Design & Build designs and builds custom kitchens for homeowners across the Baltimore metro area and surrounding Maryland counties. One in-house team stays with you from the first design conversation through final construction, so the vision you start with is the one that gets built.

Custom Kitchen Design & Build in the Baltimore Area
At Byrd Design & Build, we treat every kitchen as a chance to build something around the way a family actually lives. We start with your lifestyle and your eye, how you cook, how you host, what you want the room to feel like, and design from there, through the layout, the cabinetry, and the finishes that give the space its character. Because design and construction stay on one team, the kitchen you plan is the kitchen you get.
That matters most where kitchens get hard: changing the layout, moving plumbing, taking down a wall. We handle that work ourselves and tell you early what a room will really take, so the plan you approve is one we can deliver, built to work as well as it looks. You keep your vision. We make it real, and the result is a room that carries the day and adds lasting character to your home.
Custom Kitchen Layouts
We redesign your kitchen floor plan to improve flow, storage, and function. Because we handle the structural work, we tell you early which walls are load-bearing and what it takes to move them.
Custom & Semi-Custom Cabinetry
From semi-custom to fully custom cabinetry, we help you choose door styles, finishes, and interior storage that fit your kitchen and your budget, then build and hang it to last.
Countertops & Surfaces
Set the foundation with quartz, quartzite, marble, or granite counters, then let the backsplash show its personality, from classic subway tile to handmade zellige or a dramatic full-height slab, chosen to look right and last.
Open-Concept & Wall Removal
Opening up a kitchen means different things in a Roland Park colonial than in a Hunt Valley new build. We have done both, and we guide you toward the layout that fits how you live and how your home is actually built.
Let's Design a Kitchen Built Around You
A short conversation is all it takes to see what is possible in your home.
Tell us how you live and what you have in mind, and we will walk you through the options, the process, and what your project might involve.

Our Design-Build Process
Collaborative Design Consultation
We start with how you use your kitchen. Who cooks, how you host, what the current space gets wrong. The design comes out of that, not out of a template.
Selections & Planning
We guide you through layout, materials, and appliances, and handle permits and scheduling behind the scenes, so you are not managing a construction project on top of your job.
Build & Final Walkthrough
We build with the same care we designed with, keep you posted as we go, and finish with a full walkthrough to confirm every detail is right before we call it done.
The Experience Behind a Byrd Kitchen
Rick Byrd founded Byrd Design & Build in 2011 in the Baltimore area where he grew up. He studied architectural design at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), then spent six and a half years apprenticing under a general contractor and master plumber. Kitchens are where that combination matters most, where a well-planned layout meets the reality of cabinetry, plumbing, and electrical all having to line up.
Some of the most demanding kitchens are the ones set inside older homes, where nothing is square and surprises hide behind the walls. Solving those problems is where the craft lives, and those lessons shape how the Byrd team approaches every kitchen, anticipating issues and building for how a family really uses the space.
For homeowners, that experience means steady, personal guidance. Rick and the team walk you through materials and finishes, join you at showrooms when it helps, and make sure you never navigate the decisions alone. The goal is never resale value first. It is a kitchen that reflects how you live, with character and attention to the details others overlook.

We recently had Byrd Design & Build complete a major basement dig-out and renovation, adding an office, bath, and multiple closets. We are thrilled with the results! A huge part of our positive experience was due to our project lead, Donnie Mendez. He was fantastic. Always going above and beyond, communicating clearly, and ensuring we were happy every step of the way. Any issues that arose were handled promptly and professionally. We are incredibly happy and would highly recommend them for your renovation needs!Posted on Google![]()

We recently had an addition put on our home that included a new mudroom 1/2 bath and in-law suite. We could not be happier with the final product. Anyone who is looking to do some home improvement we highly recommend Byrd Design and Build. They were amazing from the very first email when they responded to my inquiry. Dalton and his team were a pleasure to work with. They were in constant communication, listened to what I really needed/wanted and never tried to talk me out of my vision but provided guidance if what I wanted wasn't logistically feasible. I didn't know what I was getting into with such a big undertaking, but Dalton was there every step of the way helping us out. His team was super knowledgeable and did excellent/thorough work. They exceeded my expectations in every way. I cannot speak highly enough of them.Posted on Google![]()

Our recent stay in a home by Byrd Design and Build was an absolute pleasure. What stood out most was the thoughtful attention to detail — not just in the construction or how the home functions, but how it feels. Every room had a sense of purpose and character, brought together with cohesive style and care. The finishes and materials were beautifully selected, creating a polished yet welcoming atmosphere. From striking light fixtures to carefully chosen textures and colors, the home had a modern, elevated aesthetic that still felt incredibly comfortable. It was clear that no detail was overlooked—from the custom kitchen and unique tile work to subtle design moments that made each space feel special. We especially appreciated how the home offered a variety of beautifully designed spaces to suit different needs—whether it was a cozy reading nook, a playful bunk room for the kids, or serene, spa-like bathrooms that felt like a retreat. The home had personality and warmth, with an underlying sense of cohesion that tied everything together.Posted on Google![]()

I recently had the pleasure of working with Byrd Design and Build on a kitchen renovation. The project was surprisingly seamless and professional.Actually, it was fun!! From start to finish, the team was totally focused on my job although I knew they had several projects happening at once. The crew reported on time. They were respectful and able to answer my many questions to my complete satisfaction-not an easy task!! At the end of the work day the area was cleaned and orderly. There was never a mess.Perhaps the most amazing part to me was watching incredibly skilled craftsmen perform a most difficult cabinet install in a big old stone house. They paid attention to every detail, ensuring that everything was executed to perfection. All the work was done in a timely manner and within budget. We are thrilled!Posted on Google![]()

I cannot say enough amazing things about Byrd Design and Build! First of all, the professionalism and customer service is top notch. The BDB team was always in constant communication and always made sure I was not only satisfied, but delighted with every step of the project. We used them for a partial kitchen renovation. It required demolition, dry wall, carpentry, tile work, electric, etc and they made sure everything was clean day in and day out. They followed our requests and vision, but constantly gave us suggestions, advice, design ideas, etc. You can not get that with just using a contractor. Our project manager, Darren Greene, was also amazing! I really needed his expertise and he went above and beyond in every aspect. Our final product came out better than I could have envisioned. Can't wait to find more projects for BDB to complete!
What a Kitchen Remodel Costs With Byrd
These are the ranges most of our kitchen projects fall into. Your number depends on the size of the room, your selections, and what we find when the walls come open, and you get a detailed estimate before any work begins.

- Cabinetry, counters, and appliances replaced in place
- Semi-custom cabinetry in your choice of door style and finish
- New lighting, flooring, and backsplash
- Plumbing and electrical stay where they are
Premium
$95K–$165K
Layout changes and a wall opened

Every estimate accounts for what is behind the plaster. In older Baltimore homes, the wiring, plumbing, and framing rarely match the drawings, and we would rather tell you that before demolition than after.
Kitchen Remodeling FAQs
How much does a kitchen remodel cost in the Baltimore area?
Most of the kitchens we design and build fall into three ranges. Kitchens that keep their existing footprint typically run $60,000 to $95,000. Layout changes, like opening a wall or moving the sink or range, usually land between $95,000 and $165,000. Projects that reach into adjacent rooms, with custom cabinetry and natural stone throughout, start around $165,000. The biggest swings we see come from three places: semi-custom versus fully custom cabinetry, whether a load-bearing wall comes out and needs a beam, and what an older Baltimore home is hiding behind the plaster, like undersized wiring or old galvanized pipe. We give you a detailed estimate once we understand the scope, before any work begins, so you are never guessing.
How long does a kitchen remodel take?
Most kitchen remodels run about 8 to 14 weeks from the start of construction, though the full timeline depends on the design and selection phase beforehand. A cosmetic update can move faster; a full renovation with custom cabinetry, structural work, or long-lead appliances takes longer. Custom cabinetry and certain materials often have lead times of several weeks, so we plan the schedule around them and give you a realistic timeline before any demolition begins. You can follow progress the whole way through your project portal.
Do I need a permit to remodel my kitchen in Baltimore County?
Usually, yes. Structural changes, electrical work, and plumbing modifications require permits in Baltimore County and the surrounding jurisdictions. Cosmetic updates that do not touch structure, wiring, or plumbing often do not. Either way, we handle the permit process for you as part of the project, so you do not have to navigate the county on your own.
Can you remove a wall to open up my kitchen?
Often, yes, but it depends on whether the wall is load-bearing and what is running through it, like plumbing, wiring, or ductwork. Because we handle the structural side of the work ourselves, we can tell you early what is involved in your specific home, what it will take, and what it will cost, before you commit to the design. Opening a kitchen to the rest of the home is one of the most common changes we make, and we will give you a straight answer about what is possible in your house.
Do you help choose appliances, cabinetry, and materials?
Yes. Guiding you through selections is a core part of how we work. We walk you through cabinetry, countertops, backsplashes, appliances, and finishes, and we will join you at showrooms and specialty suppliers when it helps you decide. You keep your vision and your taste. We bring the experience to help you make choices you will still be happy with years later.
What is design-build, and how is it different from hiring a contractor on your own?
In a design-build firm, the design and the construction sit on one team. That means the people planning your kitchen and the people building it stay in step from the first drawing through the final walkthrough, which gives you clearer accountability, fewer surprises, and a single point of contact from start to finish. You are not caught in the middle coordinating between separate parties who have never worked together.
Do you remodel kitchens in older and historic homes?
Yes. A good deal of our work is in the Baltimore area's older homes, from century-old houses in Roland Park to established stone homes in Ruxton and Towson. These homes come with their own surprises, walls that are not square, old wiring and plumbing, materials that are no longer made, and years of working in them means we know how to update a kitchen without stripping out the character that makes the house worth keeping.
Will my kitchen be usable during the remodel?
For most full remodels, the kitchen itself is out of commission during construction, so we help you plan a temporary setup, often a microwave, sink, and refrigerator in a nearby space, so daily life is as manageable as possible. We keep the work area contained, protect the rest of your home, and clean up at the end of each day, because you are still living there while we work.
Areas We Serve
We remodel kitchens throughout the Baltimore area, and we know these homes by their bones. The stone houses and early-century estates of Ruxton, the Tudors and Victorians of Roland Park, the Colonials and Craftsman homes around Towson and Timonium, and the newer custom builds of Hunt Valley. Each style comes with its own quirks in how a kitchen was originally built, and after years of working in them, we know what to expect before the first wall comes down.
