Luxury Bathroom Remodeling in Maryland
Since 2011, Byrd Design & Build has been designing and building bathrooms across the Baltimore area, from primary suites in Ruxton to full renovations in Roland Park. One team designs it, plumbs it, tiles it, and finishes it, so nothing gets lost along the way, and neither do you.

A Maryland Bathroom Remodel Built Around Your Daily Routine
Byrd Design & Build designs and builds custom bathrooms across the Baltimore area, from quick refreshes to full primary suites. Most of the bathrooms we are called about are ones people have quietly put up with for years: too tight, dated, a shower you step around rather than into. We listen to what is not working, then design a room that fixes it.
The part that matters most is the part you never see. Behind the tile sit the plumbing, drainage, and waterproofing that decide whether a bathroom stays sound for decades or starts hiding problems in a few years. We build those layers with the same care as the marble on top, so the room works as well as it looks.
Custom Layouts for Modern Comfort
Primary suites, family and hall baths, and the extra bath that comes with a larger renovation. We take on all of them, and give each the same attention.
Spa inspired Showers & Tubs
Curbless walk-in showers, custom glass, and freestanding soaking tubs, built on waterproofing that is done right the first time.
Vanities, Tile & Finishes
Custom vanities, natural stone, and tile chosen to look right together and hold up to daily use and moisture.
Waterproofing & Plumbing
Membranes, slopes, and drains go in right before the first tile, and ventilation is sized to the room. It is the work that keeps a bathroom sound for decades.
Let's Design a Bathroom Built Around You
A short conversation is all it takes to see what is possible in your space. Tell us how you use the room and what you have in mind, and we will walk you through the options, the process, and what your project might involve.

Our Design-Build Process
Personalized Consultation
We start with how you use the bathroom. Your morning routine, who shares the space, what the current room gets wrong. The design comes out of that, not out of a template.
Selections & Planning
We guide you through fixtures, tile, and finishes, and handle permits, plumbing, and scheduling behind the scenes, so you are not managing a construction project on top of your job.
Build & Final Walkthrough
We build with the same care we designed with, keep you posted as we go, and finish with a full walkthrough to confirm every detail is right before we call it done.
Why the Contractor Matters as Much as the Finish
Most people never think about who is actually building their bathroom until something goes wrong. Rick Byrd built his company on the opposite instinct. He studied architectural design at MICA, then spent six and a half years learning the trade under a general contractor and a master plumber, the kind of tradesmen who could tell, just by looking, which bathrooms were built to last and which were built to sell.
That is why Rick cares about the things you will not see on a finished bathroom. He has opened enough walls in old Baltimore homes to know where corners get cut and what it costs a homeowner years later. That is the standard he built the company on, and it holds whether the job is a hall bath or a full primary suite.
The team he built holds that same standard. Byrd’s designers, project managers, and craftsmen are hand-picked, each an expert in their own trade. When you hire Byrd, you are not getting one person stretched across a job site. You are getting a room full of specialists who treat your home the way they were trained to: get the hidden work right, and the beautiful part takes care of itself.

We recently had Byrd Design & Build complete a major basement dig-out and renovation, adding an office, bath, and multiple closets. We are thrilled with the results! A huge part of our positive experience was due to our project lead, Donnie Mendez. He was fantastic. Always going above and beyond, communicating clearly, and ensuring we were happy every step of the way. Any issues that arose were handled promptly and professionally. We are incredibly happy and would highly recommend them for your renovation needs!Posted on Google![]()

We recently had an addition put on our home that included a new mudroom 1/2 bath and in-law suite. We could not be happier with the final product. Anyone who is looking to do some home improvement we highly recommend Byrd Design and Build. They were amazing from the very first email when they responded to my inquiry. Dalton and his team were a pleasure to work with. They were in constant communication, listened to what I really needed/wanted and never tried to talk me out of my vision but provided guidance if what I wanted wasn't logistically feasible. I didn't know what I was getting into with such a big undertaking, but Dalton was there every step of the way helping us out. His team was super knowledgeable and did excellent/thorough work. They exceeded my expectations in every way. I cannot speak highly enough of them.Posted on Google![]()

Our recent stay in a home by Byrd Design and Build was an absolute pleasure. What stood out most was the thoughtful attention to detail — not just in the construction or how the home functions, but how it feels. Every room had a sense of purpose and character, brought together with cohesive style and care. The finishes and materials were beautifully selected, creating a polished yet welcoming atmosphere. From striking light fixtures to carefully chosen textures and colors, the home had a modern, elevated aesthetic that still felt incredibly comfortable. It was clear that no detail was overlooked—from the custom kitchen and unique tile work to subtle design moments that made each space feel special. We especially appreciated how the home offered a variety of beautifully designed spaces to suit different needs—whether it was a cozy reading nook, a playful bunk room for the kids, or serene, spa-like bathrooms that felt like a retreat. The home had personality and warmth, with an underlying sense of cohesion that tied everything together.Posted on Google![]()

I recently had the pleasure of working with Byrd Design and Build on a kitchen renovation. The project was surprisingly seamless and professional.Actually, it was fun!! From start to finish, the team was totally focused on my job although I knew they had several projects happening at once. The crew reported on time. They were respectful and able to answer my many questions to my complete satisfaction-not an easy task!! At the end of the work day the area was cleaned and orderly. There was never a mess.Perhaps the most amazing part to me was watching incredibly skilled craftsmen perform a most difficult cabinet install in a big old stone house. They paid attention to every detail, ensuring that everything was executed to perfection. All the work was done in a timely manner and within budget. We are thrilled!Posted on Google![]()

I cannot say enough amazing things about Byrd Design and Build! First of all, the professionalism and customer service is top notch. The BDB team was always in constant communication and always made sure I was not only satisfied, but delighted with every step of the project. We used them for a partial kitchen renovation. It required demolition, dry wall, carpentry, tile work, electric, etc and they made sure everything was clean day in and day out. They followed our requests and vision, but constantly gave us suggestions, advice, design ideas, etc. You can not get that with just using a contractor. Our project manager, Darren Greene, was also amazing! I really needed his expertise and he went above and beyond in every aspect. Our final product came out better than I could have envisioned. Can't wait to find more projects for BDB to complete!

Bathroom Permits in Baltimore County
Bathroom remodeling in Maryland often requires permits for plumbing, electrical, and layout changes. Our experienced team handles the entire process, coordinating with county inspectors and ensuring every detail meets state and local requirements. You never have to deal with the county on your own.

Bathroom Remodeling FAQs
How much does a bathroom remodel cost in the Baltimore area?
Most of the bathrooms we design and build fall into three ranges. A hall or secondary bath typically runs $35,000 to $55,000. A primary bath that keeps its footprint usually lands between $55,000 and $95,000. Primary baths that grow into a closet or adjacent room, with a curbless shower, heated floors, or natural stone throughout, start around $95,000. When a hall bath is part of a larger renovation, it usually costs less than it would on its own, because the design work, permits, and trades are already on the project. In our experience, the biggest swings come from moving plumbing, especially the toilet drain, and from what turns up once the old tile comes off in an older Baltimore home: a soft subfloor, cast iron drains, or no real waterproofing at all. We give you a detailed estimate once we understand the scope, before any work begins, so you are never guessing.
How long does a bathroom remodel take?
Most bathroom remodels run about 4 to 8 weeks from the start of construction, with primary suites and layout changes taking longer. Custom vanities, stone, and certain fixtures can carry lead times of several weeks, so we plan the schedule around them and give you a realistic timeline before demolition begins. You can follow progress the whole way through your project portal.
Is a bathroom remodel worth the investment in Maryland?
It depends on the house, the neighborhood, and how long you plan to stay, and anyone who gives you one number for every home is oversimplifying. In our experience, a well-built primary bath in a Ruxton or Roland Park home is close to what buyers expect at that price point, while the same budget in a neighborhood with lower home values can outrun what the market will pay back. For a regional reference point, the 2024 Cost vs. Value Report puts an upscale bathroom remodel in Baltimore at about $79,900, with roughly 47 percent of that recouped at resale. That is an average across the metro, not a forecast for your home. We design bathrooms to be lived in first, and the clients happiest with the investment are the ones who did it for how they use the room every day.

Do I need a permit to remodel my bathroom in Baltimore County?
Usually, yes. Plumbing changes, electrical work, and layout changes require permits in Baltimore County and the surrounding jurisdictions. A straight fixture-and-finish update sometimes does not. Either way, we handle the permit process and coordinate inspections for you as part of the project.
Can you move the plumbing to change my bathroom layout?
Often, yes. Relocating a toilet, shower, or vanity is one of the more common requests we get, and it is exactly the kind of work our team is built to handle. We will tell you early what moving the plumbing involves in your specific home, what it will take, and what it will cost, before you commit to a layout.
How do you prevent mold, leaks, and water damage in a new bathroom?
This is the part that matters most and shows the least. We waterproof wet areas properly before any tile goes down, size the ventilation to the room, and handle the plumbing and drainage to code and beyond. Done right, it is the difference between a bathroom that stays sound for decades and one that hides problems behind the tile.
Can you design a bathroom for aging in place or accessibility?
Yes. Curbless walk-in showers, wider doorways, grab bars set into solid blocking, comfort-height fixtures, and zero-threshold entries can all be built in, and they are easiest and cleanest to do during a full remodel. We can design a bathroom that works beautifully now and keeps working as your needs change.
Do you remodel bathrooms in older and historic homes?
Yes. A good deal of our work is in the Baltimore area's older homes, from century-old houses in Roland Park to established stone homes in Ruxton and Towson. Old bathrooms come with their own surprises, dated plumbing, uneven floors, and tight spaces, and years of working in them means we know how to modernize a bathroom without harming the character of the house.
Will I have use of a bathroom during the remodel?
For a single-bathroom home, we plan the schedule carefully to minimize the time the room is out of use, and we talk through it with you up front so there are no surprises. We keep the work area contained, protect the rest of your home, and clean up at the end of each day, because you are still living there while we work.
