You Can Tidy Too!

It’s a new year and I have an overwhelming sense of wanting to improve the lives of my family and myself. Enter “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” on Netflix. I binged the series over the weekend. Marie had some fantastic ways to declutter not only your home, but your life. There are a lot of great methods to help a cluttered home (like ours) but I decided to approach the tasks in a more gentle way. Like my mom always said “the only way to eat an elephant, is one bite at a time.” 

My Method

I decided to break down the rooms I wanted to really pay attention to and spend 15 minutes a day decluttering. I began with the rooms that needed the most attention and those I spend the most time in. Here are some quick tasks I have begun.

  1. Pick 15 items out of your closet that you no longer wear and put them in a box to donate.
  2. Clean out your laundry room cabinets. They really accumulate a lot of unneeded junk!
  3. Open the dreaded junk drawer and clean it out. Why do you even have so many random keys?!
  4. Take a walk through your house and pick up 15 items you no longer need. Trash them or put in a box to donate.
  5. Open that pantry and find the expired or stale items and trash them. Hello Jell-o pack from 2012!
  6. Open the coffee mug cabinet and pick out the 3-5 you use most. Get rid of the rest!
  7. Sort through your electronics and recycle the old cell phones and electric cords that you have no idea what they belong to.
  8. Take a look at your beauty products and toss the expired, crusty, or otherwise useless lotions, nail polishes, and makeup.
  9. Clean off surfaces. Open all of that mail that’s been piling up and recycle anything you don’t need. Attend to those pesky bills, and get rid of it all!
  10. Open the linen closet and throw out old towels, sheets, and blankets that are faded and stained. Better yet, donate them to an animal shelter. How many towels do you really need anyway?

By committing to living this way, you will have far less stuff to worry about putting away or cleaning every day. It will take you some time but you will begin to notice that surfaces are clearer, cleaner and more organized.
